I agree with Bob that the AMC heads are superior to the OE VW Heads. I had a set that was on a 2.1l engine for over five years without any maintenance being done to the cooling system. Popped the heads off (customer overheated the engine because of a coolant hose failure) and they were not pitted at all! The OE heads (according to many customer records I have looked at) pitted within the first year or two of the vans being new. I have seen so many records where the van owner reported head gasket leaks to VW and got a whole new (rebuilt) engine from VW within the first year! Many more before 60k miles. AMC heads are a great product!

If you can't find a 1.9l head (discontinued) I would put a set of new AMC 2.1l heads on there. They work fine on the 1.9l. I did this last year on a van that I fixed up for sale and I noticed no difference in power, etc. The van was just here for the one year check up and the motor is still running awesome!

Hope this helps, Ken Wilford John 3:16 www.vanagain.com
