Mine got flakey in the middle of a long hot trip a couple of years ago. We finished the journey with a paper clip stuck in the socket which kept it on the 3rd speed all the time. I did eventually open up the switch and repair it, but I don't remember the details. I believe that corrosion on the contacts had caused the switch to heat up and the plastic supporting the 3rd speed contact had sagged so that it was out of position.
