Like i stated last week here, i just did one head this week with the engine still in the van, it was OK since i did that engine 2 years ago and all bolts were easy to remove, BUT! gravity DOSN'T work for you! and it take some good practice and knowledge to do so.

As i am showing in that video (32 megs): http://www.benplace.com/pistons_videos/piston4.WMV

It's way more easy when the engine is on the side on a engine stand.

The head i have done had a crack outsite, between one plug and one stud, impossible to see with the human eye! Like Bob stated, even small crack between valves can be fatal. So putting back old head is a risk. The worse risk is that will working on the old heads and/or torking them back on the engine you can dammage them.

Anyway, what i'm trying to say is that you are not sure if combustion pressure push the outter gasket out of if just poor sealing was the problem? I think it's very easy to install the outter gasket, dificult to go wrong. I have seen heads without any sealing stuff on the the outter gasket last way more than 1500k miles.

So i would blame a crack head my friend.

Regards, Ben
