The Vanagons have a support bracket for the radio that is EXTREMELY shallow in comparison to most DIN units. However, that bracket can easily be bent out of the way, and full depth DIN units will fit without problems usually. Crutchfield either chooses to not know this, or ignore this.

I've posted before on the list regarding 4" speakers. I'm very pleased with the ones I have.
