I had the exact same thing happen. What I also found was that the high/low pressure switch was fried. The underlying cause for the chain of failures was an increase in resistance due to corroded contacts. My mechanic and I corrected this problem by replacing a few corroded ring wire connectors. You may also want to check the resistor up front to make sure the condenser/cooling fan works on both speeds-its behind the driver's side headlight bucket. I'm still working with a slight leak (o-ring replacement related) on the low side condenser connection but otherwise have been chilling down as cool as 34 deg. F. Good luck.
