Subject: '84 Running a Wee Bit Warm

My '84 Westy is running slightly warmer than usual. Recently, I popped some hoses off for inspection and to begin tracking down the source of coolant loss, and used that as an opportunity to flush - using the garden hose method, at several different hose connections - the old coolant. I then sealed up the whole system, filled with water, and repeated the process several times . It gave me good practice at raising the front, and bleeding the whole bleeding system. Not an unpleasant job, though a bit noisy: no exhaust system.

Now, with a shiny new Bus Depot exhaust system kit (delivered in three days:), I could hear the source of my coolant leak: the water pump. I took the van to a VW specialist (30 minutes, 40-60 mph). On the way to the mechanic, my temp needle was on the left edge of the LED warning light. Left edge, nice and cool. Driving home, with a new thermostat (87C) and water pump, the needle was right of the LED.

I've topped off and bled the system since, and believe the air is out and the system is full.

So, the recent changes are: all new exhaust and O2 sensor, water pump, and thermostat, plus some back flushing with the hose. Why so hot?

Also, fwiw, I did my fuel hoses 5 years ago, thanks to the (legitimate) paranoia of this list.

Thanks all,

Kevin '84 Westfalia (everybody needs a Project)
