I saw a number of the Smart cars in Germany last summer. I saw a few on the autobahn cruising at 90 MPH (140KPH). I don't know much about their crash worthiness. I did see one video where they crashed a Smart car and another compact into a concrete barrier at 70 MPH and the Smart car fared better than the other car. However, as it was pointed out, occupants of either vehicle (or any other vehicle) would have been killed at that speed and nature of collision. The Smart car was designed with safety as a consideration. For the purpose it was designed, I think it would be an adequate vehicle. I wouldn't mind having one for the around town travel. I think they make a four seater, too. We also saw a sport car version of the Smart car which was pretty cool, but probably won't be sold on our side of the pond.
