Thermostats can and do fail closed. The air cooled ones used vacuum to pull closed and has a solder type seal that would melt when over heated to fail open. Water cooled thermostats use a "Waxman" to operate. If the wax should leak out which often happens after any overheat it will not open again next time. That is why they should always be replaced after any cooling system failure. Dennis
