Water is NOT an appropriate extinguishing agent for a gasoiline, oil or electrical fire.....

Dry chem (white powder) is excellent but leaves a big mess, and if ingested into a running engine, will destroy it.

Halon 1211 or 1301 is excellent, leaves no mess, but is a CFC (if you care).

CO2 is excellent, leaves no mess, but can cause thermal shock to engine and frostbite to you (very cold).

An excellent, simple Halon bottle with a right-angle fitting and sprinkler head threaded into it and mounted in the engine bay, is a great on-board, automatic fire suppression system (sprinkler head melt temp must be correct to prevent false releases).

I work for a fire suppression service company, that also sells and services all types of extinguishers. I can look into the details of obtaining such a device, and get back to the list with details.

I think, Westy owners have it easy when it comes to install a fire extingusher system in the engine area, because they have onboard about 12 gallon of water. They only need some pipes, sprayers, valve, etc. Anyone wants to get into designing one? Zoltan
