My 83.5 has a metal connecting fuel line fitting right above the tranny/starter area. Mine had a severe clog once in it. It caused the fuel line right before the fitting to break and fule streaming out like crazy. Once I fixed the fuel line I found some boost in engine power. Looks like you are close to find the problem.
