A lot of cheap AC manifold gauges are just that cheap. As in not particularly good. I was lucky in getting a good one (for R12). Most of the ones offered in local stores are cheap plastic and won't hold up for more than a few uses (if that long). If you plan on working on your AC more than one time, I'd recommend getting a good AC manifold gauge, with hoses and adapters for both R12 and R134a fittings.

I don't have a modern recommendation as I've had my set for long enough that I no longer remember where I got it.
