I tried a channel lock, and had poor results, so resorted to my slide puller. It has a hook on one end, and a sliding hammer on the other. It only took a couple of pulls, rotating the wheel meanwhile, to remove the dustcap. If you don't have a puller, it is well worthwhile getting one.
