My 84 normally runs a smidge to the right of the lamp, like right on its edge. Even when climbing up a long grade in 100F+ weather the needle doesn't move much farther than one lamp width more to the right. At this point, or at low speeds when there isn't enough air being forced through the radiator, the high speed fan turns on.
