OK, I replaced the alternator and everything works again! Yea! My theory is the worn alternator which was replaced by the PO with a crappy looking rebuild couldn't take the extra draw of the A/C which I've only used a couple times since I just got it working again. We get about a weeks worth of A/C weather up here in the Mount Washington Valley and it was the last thing I had to fix...now everything on the Vanagon works...for now.

As the alternator was dieing it didn't have enough juice to run the high draw accessories, or at least that's my theory.

This is my third Vanagon having owned 2 different silver '87 Wolfsburg Weekenders.

In an interesting side note, I worked for a VW/Porsche/Audi dealer in Natick, Massachusetts in 1987 and we used a Syncro Vanagon for a customer shuttle. It was unstoppable and impressed even the most die hard drivers of "real" 4x4's. The dealership owners wife could drive anything she wanted and we had some pretty sweet inventory but she chose a Vanagon! Pretty cool I think.
