It also helps to lube the throttle shaft, the throttle coil spring, and the
accelerator cable in the engine compartment, and also to install an extra
spring at the throttle. I found that even after replacing my throttle cable,
the butterfly valve didn't quite seat right, leading to high idle. A
telltale sign is that when you come to a stop your idle is very high, but
then as the spring slowly closes the valve, it goes back to normal. Also
making the throttle snap back by hitting the gas pedal indicates a cable or
other seating problem. Other high idle problems won't be solved by hitting
the accelerator.
