Hi Loren,

Actually this is a pretty easy modification. You will have to remove the panel (and probably get new fittings as they break easily. Opt for the push type that you can remove when you do the replacement.

Once the panel is off, you'll see how to make attach a cable to the mechanism. Use a stout steel say 1/16" or so cable, attach it to the latch mechanism, note where a small hole will have to be made for the cable in the panel, make that hole, (1/16" Diameter or so) Clean and lube the mechanisms (latch, wiper, etc) gently while you have the opportunity. Test the latch by locking and unlocking with the cable then thread the cable through the hole in the panel and reattach the panel with the new fittings More holes to punch or drill in the plywood, but worth it for future R&R. Using a scrimshaw'd 3" section of walrus ivory, make a handle to which you can attach the cable. You COULD use a dowel but how gauche would that be. I used a dowel as I was a bit short on scrimshaw'd walrus. Works fine, fine as frog hair.

Al (who had Leon help with the installation)
