Definitely have to get the nicotine off the inside surfaces, but you gotta get something down the air ducts and here's what I'd do: there is this pet stuff called "Nature's Miracle" that is basically an enzyme that eats odor---like when your dog gets frisky with a local skunk. It has almost no smell and works great. I would put a bottle of that into a pressurized weed sprayer that has a long wand on it. Fish the wand into as many ducts as you can and let it rip. It has no solvents in it so I don't think it can hurt anything.
