I guess they figure that if the government had to build and maintain their own reservations system then ALL the taxpayers, campers or not, would be paying the fee. Not to mention hiring park personnel to take your money on check-in. This way only the user pays the fee.

$9 does seem a bit high, especially if you stay only one night.

But then it wouldn't be camping in the 'wilderness'.
