Nice to see your comments. ( but before I forget, say more about this 'spanish inquistion' thing - I don't get it yet .)

well, there are Lots of weaknesses in vanagon cooling systems. Just fundamentally, with so many parts, spread from one end of the van to the other...... A very challenged cooling system, in general.

There is one weak link in the system.

The weak link to the system is the temp sender in the radiator. I went through a couple in the 6 years I owned my 84. It is an easy replacement part. Do it.

The second.. There are two, two weak links in the system.

The second weak link is the thermostat. I always ran without, no matter what anyone said, the engine ran fin, got up to temp, etc. Be aware, I live in san jose california. Not exactly Detroit for vaarying weather conditions.

The third... There are three, three weak links in the system.

The third weak link is the water pump. Make sure your's isn't weaping. Sure sign os a WP gone bad.

The fourth... There are four, four weak links in the system.

The fourth weak link is the pressure cap on the expansion bottle. This bugger can cause wierder problems than any or all of the above. Make sure yours is good.

And remember, No one expects the Spanish Inquisition.
