According to the circuit diagram on the Bentley manual, if the temperature gauge shows a normal engine temperature the only reason the LED would keep blinking longer than it should, upon initial switching on the ignition key and the subsequent starting up of the engine, is most likely caused by an electronic module inside the instrument cluster. This little semiconductor module is responsible for the brief blinking upon initial starting up of the van.

If the LED keeps blinking but the temp gauge shows a normal temperature it is the electronic module that is doing the false alarm.

I had this problem on my 84 for over a year. I could not find anything wrong with the cooling system including coolant level and temperature sensor. I gave up the idea of fixing it after a while realizing my engine was completely find with no over-heating whatsoever.

But one day I had to dismantle my instrument cluster to repair my speedometer. I had to remove and re-install the speedometer many times. The instrument cluster was yanked on and off many times too. It was funny that after the speedometer was fixed the blinking LED problem disappeared too. It has never come back since then.

David
