Craig, 1 - First thing check (by squesing a hose) to see if the cooling system is holding pressure. ALL cooling systems (today) are pressureized and must hold pressure. 2 - Second, are you boiling over? The pressure cap is the untimate device that controls the cooling system, by regulating the pressure. 3 - Third, is the heater putting out good heat? This is a result of pressure and fluid, that you can use as you are driving.

These are three easy things every driver should be able to test for.
