Point of clarification; the GPS in the phone will work with no cell coverage. The GPS isn't dependent on cell towers for location. However, the guidance system may be. Not many phones have the memory to store all the necessary GIS information and so may require communication with the service provider. That said, I've worked with GPS enabled phones and think they're really a slick way to go. Light, mobile, and easy to use.
