I use a 1" Thermarest on top of the lower bed mattress, it deflates/ inflates by itself & can roll up into a 6" dia. roll for storage, but I usually store it folded in half behind the upper bunk when the poptop is down.

That said, I still get a sore hip if I sleep too much on my side. Need to go thicker, but don't wanna have a huge topper taking up space when traveling.
