My wife has had hip pain after sleeping on the bottom bed, so we threw on one of the 2"+ memory foams and that has solved her problem (I hope). When time comes I plan on re-upholstering the bottom and top with this stuff and maybe a layer of regular foam.

As for curtains, someone posted pictures of their van where they had replaced the curtains and added a fabric that's often used for oven mitts and ironing boards that reflects radiant heat and insulates. I think it's called Insul-Bright and is available at some quilting stores and online. I'm planning on using it to do just this as it's time to replace those old worn curtains in my van too. My only worry is this stuff will be too thick with an added piece of fabric (for appearance) to store open properly.

The cheapest I've found it online:

RE: Mattress toppers I and several others on the WetWesties list have the 2 1/2" toppers from Costco. Works great, little back problem especially compared to stock. And not a problem to store, folds in half and perfect fit behind the rear seat.
