If only there was some sort of fast, free, indexing service out there
that most people were comfortable with.

Let me get on Google and see if I can find anything like that...

Seriously, though, I think the answer is to just open up the archives
to Google (and other) search engines, after obfuscating email
addresses.  No need to reinvent the wheel.
