Ah -- the "propane gauge" question! It's a good candidate for the
vanagon wiki (VanagonWiki.net). Whoever posts the definitive answer to
this one will have their words forever immortalized on the wiki so the
next time someone needs to know the answer to this, they can be pointed
to the wiki article.
