Beetles never had vented compartments. Audi used a battery with small directly connected vent tube.

As for modern battereis, they really have not changed that much over the years. Maintenace free normally off gas very little, epecially when only ued for strting and only being float charged from the alternator. However, where you can have a problem is when soemtihng goes wrong. Say you have a cell short out. Now you you have 13.8 volts going into a 10 volt battery. Those last 5 cells are going to boil and gas really bad. Where do you want the fumes and liquid to go. A so called sealed battery is going to do the same. Less available liquid but those pressure relief vents are going to open and the thing will actualy squirt and spray. If you have the cover, get the screws and fix it so the cover stays down. When needed, how much effort is it realy to turn the seat around and remove 4 screws.
