I suspect part of the reason is that many glass replacements done here are covered under insurance. I had that same window replaced on mine a few years back, and I recall the price was similar, but since I wasn't paying, I didn't see much point in haggling. In my case, a kid hit my van with a rock, but since I had to do the legwork, I wasn't too worried about saving money for the parents. I ended up watching the glass shop do the work to make sure it wasn't screwed up. They are pretty good if you go in person, but prices on the phone can be outrageous, up to 75% of new dealer pricing, as you found out...
