It's strongly recommended by the park rangers to put everything in the bear boxes. Everything. Toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm... I slept outside while in Yosemite, (the housekeeping village tent was too crowded) and I could hear a mom bear grunting to her cubs down by the river half the night. I didn't sleep too well at first, but after I decided it would be a bit of good adventure to wake up with a bear's nose in my face... I was fine after that. Come what may. It's a pain to keep putting things in the boxes and taking them out, but it beats having to get doors and canvas replaced. They've been known to peel cars open like sardine tins just for something as small as a gum wrapper. What's interesting is they know which kinds of cars and vans are easiest to get into. No kidding! They seem to prefer those mid 80s Toyota vans... strange... ;)

But waking up to trees overhead and the morning sun hitting the rocks towering a thousand feet overhead was a memorable treat. Well worth the trouble. :)
