Outer Banks. National Park Service has one right at
Oregon Inlet (below Nags Head along Hwy. 12) and
another on Ocracoke Island just north of the town.
These were packed and shadeless on Memorial Day
weekend, but nice beach access and (I've read) good
facilities. A drive to reach other amenities.
Probably $20/night.
There are numerous commercial places and I might try
Frisco CG next time ($30+) just north of the Hatteras
ferry or the third NPS place across from it on the
airport road (saw a really neat Fiat-based,
German-plated camper coming out of here).
We stayed in Ocracoke at the one on British Cemetary
Road (can't remember the name of the place; Booker's?
Boomer's?). More shade and $20 for a smallish site
without power (#4 or #5 along the back hedge; $25
with). Okay facilities and closer to things, but more
than half the sites were taken by parked trailers, so
not many for transients to choose from. There's
another in town called the Beachcomber; a grassy plot
surrounded by a stockade fence, unshaded and plainish
but okay looking. It'll be a drive or a bike ride to
the beach from either of these.
Stop at the Grandy Farm Market on the mainland in
Grandy about 6 miles before the bridge to the Outer
Banks. Beautiful produce and homemade pies!
