Can you restart it immediately and it runs good again?

I was having this problem with Grover as well. The great minds of the list have provided me many good opinions - I haven't decided which it is but I have managed to get it running better. Here is what I have done.

1. First I was told O2 sensor. I that is very possible but Grover doesn't have an o2 sensor (it's a long story but he will have one when I can afford a proper exhaust)

2. The Temp 2 sensor. I put in a new temp 2 sensor and it seemd to fix the problem but about 2 weeks later it started again. So I put in another new one and all is well. However I'm not convinced that was the problem either because.....

3. I was then told is could be the wiring. The reason I think this might be it is because after the second new Temp 2 sensor I did experience the same problems again one day. So I pulled over and unplugged the wiring from the Temp 2 sensor and reseated it. The problem went away.

I was experiencing the same problems you described. Running fine, black smoke, and only 150 miles to a full tank of gas (as opposed to 275-300 miles when running correctly). You could be having troubles due to any of the three reasons above. I think mine was the wiring (because the harness was transplanted from my parts bus) but your issue could easily be O2 or Temp 2. I am no expert by any means but I wanted to share what I went through because this is an extremely frustrating issue - I about pulled what was left of my hair out trying to get it working.

Good luck I hope you are able to solve this quickly.
