There's no substitution for a hitch rack. If you want to haul heavy bikes around the convenience and security of a decent hitch rack will pay for itself by not damaging your van or your bikes. The ease of use is all gravy. I understand why if they are carrying around inexpensive bicycles, it's not worth the trouble or cost.
