This was recently discussed. The fuel pump and the injectors get the 12 volt form a contact on the fuel pump relay. The relay is controlled by the ECU. The ECU needs to see ignition on, starter request or engine actually turning. The last one comes from the hall sensor in the distributor.

my singlecab syncro died halfway across my yard with a load of sand (for the kids sandbox). Upon troubleshooting, the fuel pump (NEW 1000 miles ago) is not turning on with the key. Hmmm, So i hot-wired the fuel pump, and it still doesn't start, even thouhg the pump now humms away (yes, 1/2 full tank of gas) Hmmm. What could have died that would keep the pump from pumping and let it run, at all. Ignition switch? thanks matt 4 buses 8 bikes a lot of guns a volvo v70 awd (with a viscous coupler awd system like the syncros we have).
