Subject: Oil Leak - by bell housing
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

My 84 Westy, with the 2.1L syncro motor, developed a bad oil leak. It appears to be coming from within the bell housing, and leaks most by the starter motor. When I removed the oil filler cap and drove it, there was little or no leak. I pulled and cleaned all the crankcase venting (no kinks in breather hose). Reassembled, and ran with oil cap back on. After about 10 minutes of idle, it began leaking again.

Here is a link to a photo of the leak location. http://www.flickr.com/photos/77623993@N00/1084858867/

Before I drop the manual Trans, I wondered if anyone had suggestions to help me resolve this problem. The motor runs like a top, and has less than 50k original miles on it. I drove it for 1000 miles after the install with no problems what so ever, not a drip. While doing the body work, it wasn't driven for 6 weeks, then on my way home with a beautifully restored van, oil all over the back. Lost about 1/3 QT in 20 miles.

Thanks for any advise you can provide.

84 Westy, looks great, runs great, leaks oil badly!
