There's no substitution for a hitch rack. If you want to haul heavy bikes around the convenience and security of a decent hitch rack will pay for itself by not damaging your van or your bikes. The ease of use is all gravy. Check out my write up.

I know some people have a hard time with the cost of a proper hitch and rack setup. I understand why if they are carrying around inexpensive bicycles, it's not worth the trouble or cost. My need is to have the ability to transport enthusiast level equipment on a daily basis, therefore the cost is justified.
