I have the "turd brown" as well. When it comes time I'm going with a mocha color. The interior looks fresh, so I figure I'd go with something that would match it well.

I'm assuming you have the turd brown. I almost not bought my current 83 because it had that color. When I bought it the mechanic was going to have it re-painted the original color. I asked to paint it white and they highly recommended keeping it the original color. One major reason was you needed to paint the inside door jams, etc. A much bigger job. As for the other colors available at the time, the blue looks faded even when fresh and does not match the interior. I'm not crazy about the tan either. The Assuan Brown that you have now (which I'm assuming) actually looks pretty good with a fresh paint job and when it is at it's best is when you are in the woods. The van blends right into the background and looks as if it belongs there. The color has really grown on me as the years go by the color seems to give it a more "vintage" bus look to it.

Just my thoughts....

I am going to paint my Vanagon. It is an 1983 Westfalia. The original color is not my favorite. I am trying to decide if it is a bad idea to go away from original. If I do go away from original the next question is should I pick an existing color option from that year? Or should I simply pick my favorite color? I really can't decide. I am leaning toward an exising VW color for that year. I like the two tone White/Blue. I also like the escorial green LT6A. I got this code from http://www.gti16v.com/vwcc1983.htm. Is this in fact a color option? I have never seen one this color. Thanks Wayne
