too low of a tire pressure will allow for wear such as yours. too high of a pressure will wear the center of the tire. your tires may be a soft compounding adding to the wear. try a reinforced tire next time around with a higher load rating.

I am trying to find the reason why my front tires show excessive wear on the outsides. Wheel alignment you say. I had it done when I bought the new tires about 3 years ago. I don't drive the van very much so I haven't rotated the tires yet. I just checked the wheel alignment myself as best as I could. I carefully measured on a level garage floor, after bouncing the front end a few times: toe in measures 5 mm , and the camber is about 0 degrees. Both are within the tolerances in the specs. The van steers perfectly on the highway, with no pulling to the side or vibrations or other unwanted effects.

I also noticed that my other car, not a VW, has a negative camber of several degrees, and with no uneven tire wear. This car has McPhearson struts though, does that make the difference?

All this has me puzzled. Is there anyone on the list that can shed some light on this problem?
