Hey Neil, Dottie and I just finished a big loop from Vancouver and managed to see quite a few of the forestry campsites in the caribou/chilcotin regions (and a few on the Island too).

The places we stayed were all nice, most of the time we were the only ones there. Just bring your own toilet paper and bug spray, and watch for bears. We had a black bear come within 10 feet of our van one evening at dusk at a campsite between Quesnel and Wells. We made some noise and he (or she?) ran away.

We didn't get near Salmon Arm so we can't give you advice for that area of BC, however, this book was helpful for us. http://www.hikingcamping.com/camp_bc.php

You can also get free info from government websites, assuming you can find Internet. Most places we were didn't even have cellphone service.
