Subject: AC housing reconstruction...
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hey all- Back in my younger, and more foolish days, I took it upon myself to re-do the A/C and headliner on my 87 GL. It's got the big plastic center channel that goes from back to front.

It's all been sitting on a shelf in the garage and I took it all out today and started thinking about how to reassemble it. Are there any good "tutorials" on how to do this? I've got a few broken tabs that I need to find a way to fix. Anyone have any suggestions for fixing the plastic housing so that it's strong enough to hold the AC? Also, aside from the VW recall for the vent brackets, has anyone figured out a "better" way of hanging this AC monster? What was VW thinking when it designed this??? Well, I suppose they were thinking how nice and cool it is in Germany, and figured the van didn't need an AC anyway...

Are there any aftermarket upgrades for the whole AC system? I would not be opposed to changing the whole thing out for something better. It's hot and humid here!

I am also thinking of ways to reroute the vent and have considered building an entire new plywood casing for the whole AC that would be secure and easy to maintain. Has anyone attempted this?

Also, I've been looking at the headliner materials that Sewfine sells. Are any of you familiar with their products?

THANKS!
