Subject: Fuel Pump Death
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Good Evening,

When a fuel pump dies, does it always go suddenly?

I'm asking because I've had a major stumble-under-wide-open-throttle problem all summer, especially on inclines when carrying a lot of weight. My engine is not showing any codes. (subaru 2.2) The plugs and plug wires are new.

I've changed the fuel filter twice and made sure that gas is flowing well from the tank. I've checked the fuel lines, everything's clear.

This weekend I have a new problem--it will start when cold and run well, but then when it gets hot and I shut it off and try to start it again, it's getting no fuel, and the fuel pump is super hot to the touch. It makes the sound like it's priming when I turn on the ignition, but when it's hot, you can hear a click and no whine. I wait a few hours, crank it, and it works.

This is an original Bosch unit. I did have some crap in the gas tank last year, because there were a few months there where it cavitated like hell. A filter change fixed that.

So is it possible that the fuel pump is failing when hot? Is it dying a slow death, or do they always go quickly and without warning like Anthony Soprano?

Thanks in advance, Joe T. Denver '85 Wolfsburg Westy Subie 2.2
