I bought a 91 GL van off eBay a few years ago, just for the fiberglass bumpers. It had a 2.1 GEX in it. I have the receipt from the PO. The engine had less than 15k miles and would run hot but not overheat, thats why they sold it. I tore it down to find that the AMC heads were sandblasted and repainted to look great, but had huge gaps between the valves and internal cracks as well. After seeing that I scrapped the block as well, didn't even look to see if it was usable.
Since going SVX, I have only played with the good running WBX engines I still have. Boston Bob would get my biz if I was to rebuild, but I am addicted to HP in a Syncro now. Too much fun.

VW's every day. If they buy a Vanagon and do a web search for rebuilt
Vanagon motors they'll find GEX for $1,999 and Boston Bob and others for
about $700 more. Without doing any research other than price checking it's
easy for GEX to get the sale.
I really don't know when they were ever good. I've been hearing bad stories
about them since I owned my '65 Beetle back in the early 80's.

This confuses me. I don't doubt what people are reporting about Gex, but
don't you have to make a quality product, at least some of the time, in
order to stay in business? Who do you suppose is buying their stuff, and
paying their bills, when their reputation is SO bad?
Seems odd that it can still be a business, as people have been ripping
on them, for a really long time.
