It makes a difference in 2 ways. You may consider these of no importance to you but there is a reason VW made the seats different. Either seat will mount and function on either side. As a practical matter it is much easier to find a good condition passenger seat and use it on the driver's side. The need for a replacement seat may over-ride the minor differences in functionality but the differences still exist.
