Performance and economy are worse, to be sure, but most would agree that the Vanagon automatic is more reliable than the manual. While the 090 can lose seal/cooler integrity and blow ATF into the final drive or the cooling system, this is a far rarer occurence than the dreaded 3-4 synchro slider hub failure. I'd still rather have a manual though.
