Vanagon Leaking Valve Lifter Syndrome - discussion of this is all through the archives. Not serious. You may want to get a beter quality oil filter (Mann or Mahle - the only way to fly) and a hig grade oil. I run a 2.1L WBX so can't address the air cooled models, but I use a 15W-50 Wt Mobil One Synthetic. and I change the oil on time - religiously. I rarely ever even hear a clatter. But if I let the oil change go a few miles beyond the limit - the old girl doth protest with much loud "Clackety-clackety,clackety" as I go down the road. Proper lubrication system maintenance on these beasties - whether air or watercooled - is crucial. I would think it even more so on air-cooled engines becaue they tend to run hotter.
