It is wrong to measure a leak like that. This is what you should do:

Connect the positive lead of the ammeter to the disconnected ground lead. Connect the negative lead of the ammeter to the negative lead of the battery.

If there is a leak the ammeter will show it. Be very careful connecting an ammeter to a circuit. An ammeter is like a short to a circuit. Never connect it in between the positive and the negative leads of the battery.
