Hey Gilles -

Is something draining the battery and you are trying to figure out what it is? If that is the case you might try connecting a 12V bulb in series between a disconnected battery post and it's battery cable. The current drain should cause the bulb to light or at least glow.

Then it is a matter of disabling circuits one by one until you find the one that was causing the drain. Then disable items on that circuit one by one until you find the component that is the cuprit.

Haven't tried this on a Vanagon, only on much simpler cars... but don't see why it wouldn't work.

I think the ammeter test you mention would also work but with it connected between the negative post & negative cable.
