Subject: 1987 Syncro

Hi Volks,

I am new to this watercooled list. I recently purchased an 87 Synchro. It has sat for a long time. The body is good and so is the interior. It has AC, but the belt is not connected. I am trying to keep it running. Initially it started and idled, but as soon as you touched the gas it died. No it wants to start, but I can't quite get it to catch. It sputters. If I do it too long I smell gas. I'm thinking that this can be a few things. First, dirty gas/tank syndrome. I may need to flush. I have never had a fuel injected VW before. Not sure the procedure for cleaning the injectors, but I am told it is rather simple.

Next, I thought possibly no spark. but that will be easy enough to check. I had a set of Kelly Load C range tires on late model aircoold van rims and they bolted right on. Sits a bit higher, looks a LOT better, but I'm not sure these M+S tires have the sidewall support the vehicle requires. Is there a resourse web-site like type2.com for water boxers?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Vehicle has 205k miles on it. (look to be mostly on road miles) No drips from the engine. Idled smoothly.

Regards,

Matt
