Actually, the top gear is different, gas 5 speed code AAP is .82 and diesel 5 speed code DX is .77. The .77 gives 4-5 mph faster than a .82 at same engine cruising rpm, all else equal. Of course all else is not equal in this case since the much taller final drive of the AAP makes the overall road speed higher in all gears than with the DX.

With stock 14" tires:

AAP at 3500 rpm = 68 mph in 5th, 55 mph in 4th DX at 3500 rpm = 61 mph in 5th, 46 mph in 4th

waterboxer 4 speed = 62 in 4th and 43 in 3rd, at 3500
