Hey Paul -- Any chance that your intake or exhaust pipes are cracked, and that it's only when you put the flue back on and tighten down the screws that it opens up the crack, thus your vent modifications are needed? I have a similar issue (randomly goes out for no reason) that seemed to develop after I removed the fridge and did some maintenance...
