I'll second Mike's reply. I drove mine with the belt off the pulley for a few months (didn't even remove it completely, just tucked it away and out of trouble). Gave me tennis elbow driving that way, but that's because I drove only locally....parking etc. On a long highway trip it wouldn't be bad at all.
